Centenary

During this year, 2010, Girlguiding is celebrating 100 years since its formation in 1910. Along with the Girlguiding UK national events, Girlguiding Devon will be marking this with a number of events and activities.

Devon Activity Packs - ready to download now!

Devon Guides have produced  4 quarterly activity packs which contain activities for use in weekly meetings for all sections. These start from September 2009 with creative cooking. From January to March units can work on music, dance and drama themes. In April we move onto sport and finish from July to October with water activities.

These activity packs can now be downloaded from the attachments at the bottom of this page. On completion of each section a badge can be ordered. To find these details simply look at the last page of each pack where you will find the order form.

County Camp

We are also holding a county camp for Guides from 17th to 19th September 2010 at Woodlands. The activities will include a session at the theme park, another making a lasting mosaic memorial for the centenary and activities showing the different eras of guiding.

We are catering for 750 weekend campers and 250 day visitors on the Saturday. It will be possible for Guiders who do not have their own camping qualification to bring their guides and camp under the camp organiser’s license.

Booking forms are now available in the member's area.  Completed forms will require a £20 deposit with the balance to be paid by 1st July 2010.

Centenary Celebrations

National events

The centenary celebrations kicked off over the weekend 5/6th September 2009 with many launch parties around the country.

The main national events are a National camp, 'Fusion', at Harewood House near Leeds from 31st July to 7th August 2010; this camp now has the option for brownies to camp(see attachment); a region based thinking day festival, a garden at Hampton Court Flower Show in July 2010 and adventures for all sections. Details of all events and how to book were sent out with Guiding in January 2009 in a publication entitled ‘Ways to celebrate’. Most bookings will be via the web site.

Check out the centenary pages on the member’s area of the Girlguiding web site.

Photo competition sponsored by Jessops

Details of how to submit photos highlighting 'mountain top moments' for our members can be found on the Girlguiding UK website and this lasts until October.

Hampton Court Flower Show

This event takes place at Hampton Courst from 6th to 11th July, 2010.  Guides and Senior Section members are invited to enter a comptition to design and make a centenary balcony garden, depicting centenary adventures.  Full details are on the Girlguiding UK website, but successful winners will be invited to build their garden for display at the show.

Closing Ceremonies

These will take place at local level at 20.10 on 20/10/2010.  These ceremonies need to be registered with CHQ via the main guiding website.  The key events that should occur at these ceremonies should be:

  • The renewal of promise
  • Look back at national and local events
  • To create a lasting record of who was present and renewed their promise
  • To share opportunities for the future
  • To consider the world wide aspect of guiding
  • A DVD will be made available for showing at these events from September 2010

Grand Ball

This is an event for adult members in Devon, 24th September, 2010, at Sandy Park Exeter, further details and information can be found in the Members Page

Frequently asked questions

Can existing charitable projects count for the Changing the World Challenge?

The idea of changing the world is to demonstrate in a high profile way our commitment to service prior to our centenary celebrations. However to count the project must take place between September 2008 and August 2009 and involve either fundraising or raising the profile of your chosen charity.

Can Brownies or Senior section attend the Woodlands camp?

No, it is the Guide section that is celebrating their centenary and the camp is purely for those girls.

How do I book for the national events?

All activities will be advertised in ‘Ways to Celebrate’ being sent to all guiders with January2009 guiding magazine. Full details on booking arrangements and costs will be included.
